How to Massage the Neck and Shoulders Safely

Quick Answer

The neck and shoulders often tighten after computer work, phone use or carrying a bag. Gentle massage should target muscle rather than the spine or front of the neck. More pressure is not necessarily better; excessive neck pressure may provoke pain, dizziness or nerve irritation.

The neck and shoulders often tighten after computer work, phone use or carrying a bag. Gentle massage should target muscle rather than the spine or front of the neck. More pressure is not necessarily better; excessive neck pressure may provoke pain, dizziness or nerve irritation.

Do not massage pain that began after a collision, fall or sudden movement. Arrange an assessment if it is accompanied by numbness, arm weakness, radiating pain, fever or difficulty walking.

How to include it in a routine

Body position: Sit facing forward with the back supported and arms relaxed. A family member should stand behind or to the side and must not pull the head.

Amount of oil: Begin with about 4–6 drops for both shoulders. Spread it over the palms first and add only a little if needed; excess oil reduces pressure control.

  1. Warm the palms and rest them over the upper shoulders for a few seconds.
  2. Use long palm strokes from the base of the neck towards the outer shoulder, slowly on both sides.
  3. Make small circles over the shoulder muscles using the thumb pads or soft knuckles, never over the spine.
  4. At the back of the neck, glide lightly from the base of the skull towards the upper shoulders. Avoid the sides and front of the neck.
  5. Finish with three long strokes. If comfortable, the recipient may slowly roll the shoulders.

Put safety first

Duration and pressure: Massage for 5–8 minutes, using comfortable pressure of about 2–3 out of 10 and never sharp pain.

Areas to avoid:

  • The front and sides of the neck, especially where a pulse is easily felt.
  • The cervical spine, prominent shoulder bones, bruising and swelling.
  • Twisting, pulling or attempting to ‘crack’ the neck.

Stop signs: Stop for dizziness, pain radiating into an arm, numbness, weakness, a new headache, faintness or increasing pain.

Evaluate the experience realistically

Gentle massage should feel calm and manageable during and after the session. A stronger sensation is not proof of greater benefit. If symptoms persist, recur or interfere with normal activity, obtain advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
