Warming massage oils containing Methyl Salicylate — including Minyak Tapil Cap Wanita — are not recommended during pregnancy. Methyl Salicylate belongs to the salicylate family and is absorbed through the skin, and salicylate use is discouraged in pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester. For aches during pregnancy, use a plain oil such as coconut oil, warm (not hot) compresses, and gentle massage. Check with your doctor or a qualified midwife before using any product.
This is one of the questions we are asked most often, and the answer needs to be clear: warming massage oil is not recommended during pregnancy. Here is why, and what to use instead.
The active ingredient that produces the warmth in most massage oils is Methyl Salicylate. It belongs to the same family as aspirin — the salicylates. Salicylates are absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream, and salicylate use during pregnancy is discouraged, particularly in the third trimester.
The warning on the Minyak Tapil Cap Wanita label states that it is for external use only and unsuitable for children under 2 years old. For pregnancy, our advice goes further than the label: do not use it, and ask your doctor first.
Do not panic. Using it once or twice on a small area of skin is not the same as taking it orally. Stop using it, and mention it to your doctor or health clinic at your next appointment so it is recorded. They know your pregnancy history and can give an answer specific to your situation — we cannot.
Once you are no longer pregnant, and after your doctor or midwife approves it at your post-natal check. Take care if you are breastfeeding: apply it well away from the chest and wash your hands before handling the baby, as the baby must not come into contact with it. For use during confinement, see a guide to post-natal massage during confinement.
Not for children under 2 years old — this is stated on the product label. For older children, use only a small amount on a small area, and never near the face, nose or eyes.
This information is general. Every pregnancy is different, and only a doctor or qualified midwife who knows your medical history can give advice specific to your situation.
