Period pain is relieved by a warm compress on the lower abdomen for 15 to 20 minutes, gentle circular massage of the lower abdomen and lower back, light movement such as walking, and warm drinks. Heat works because it loosens the contracting womb muscle and widens the blood vessels to the area. Apply warming massage oil to the waist and lower back rather than the thin, sensitive skin of the abdomen.
Period pain, or dysmenorrhoea, is cramping in the lower abdomen before and during menstruation. It happens because the womb contracts to shed its lining, and those contractions briefly cut off blood flow to the womb muscle.
Heat does two things at once. It loosens the contracting smooth muscle of the womb, and it widens the blood vessels in the area so blood flow returns. This is why a hot water bottle and a warm compress remain the most commonly used home measures — not out of tradition alone, but because they target the cause of the pain directly.
Abdominal skin is thinner and more absorbent than the back or legs, so warming oil can feel too stinging there. The safer approach: apply it to the waist and lower back, and use heat alone on the abdomen. If you do want to try it on the abdomen, test a small area first and stop if the skin reddens or stings.
Important: warming massage oil containing Methyl Salicylate is not suitable during pregnancy. If there is any chance you are pregnant, read is warming massage oil safe during pregnancy first.
See a doctor if the pain stops you working or attending school every month, gets worse year on year, begins more than three days before your period, comes with very heavy bleeding, hurts during bowel movements or intercourse, or does not ease with ordinary pain relief. That pattern can indicate endometriosis or fibroids, and both need a diagnosis — not just a warm compress.
